In this week’s post we are going to see some idioms in Spanish in which we use the colour GREEN.
SER MÁS RARO QUE UN PERRO VERDE
We use this phrase when we want to express that a person is VERY rare.
ESTAR VERDE
It means that a person is inexperienced, not mature (like fruit).
For example, on the first day of a new job.
UN CHISTE VERDE
Un chiste verde is a joke with erotic, sexual content. A dirty joke.
(I am not giving you any examples … hahaha)
ESTAR VERDE DE ENVIDIA
When one person is very envious, jealous.
For example, when I see my friend’s pics on Instagram travelling… arrrrrrjjjjjjj !!! Estoy verde de envidia.
DAR/ TENER LUZ VERDE
It means that you are allowed to do something.
For example: Mi jefe me ha dado luz verde para empezar un proyecto nuevo. My boss has given me the green light to start a new project.
¡A BUENAS HORAS, MANGAS VERDES!
We use this idiom when a person is late to solve a problem and their help is no longer useful.
For example: I am thirsty and I ask my husband for a glass of water and he does not bring it to me. I go for the glass of water and later he brings it to me … ¡A buenas horas, mangas verdes! (I no longer need the glass of water, my husband is late to solve my problem)
SER UN VIEJO VERDE
A dirty old man who says dirty things to young girls.
