Having a red face from shame or from being burned by the sun.

ESTAR EN NÚMEROS ROJOS 

When you have debts with the bank and your account is below 0. 

Este mes no puedo pagar el alquiler porque estoy en números rojos.

This week you are going to learn some idioms in Spanish with the colour NEGRO. BLACK. 

VERLO TODO NEGRO 

It means not having much hope, having doubts and being a little pessimistic about a situation.  

Por ejemplo: No creo que me den el trabajo en el periódico…lo veo un poco negro. 

 

DINERO NEGRO 

Money that is obtained from illegal work or that we do not declare to the government. Black money, dirty money. 

 

ESTAR NEGRO-A 

We use this expression to say that we are fed up with something or someone. 

 

TENER “LA NEGRA” 

 It means having bad luck. 

 

GÉNERO NEGRO 

The black genre (in literature, cinema, theater …) is the police, crime genre. Thriller. 

 

SER LA OVEJA NEGRA 

That person who is different from others (within a group of friends or family) and who is usually problematic. Black sheep. 

Todos en mi familia son abogados de éxito y yo decidí ser artista…Para ellos yo soy la oveja negra. 

 

TRABAJAR EN NEGRO 

 Work without declaring it to the government and receiving black money. 

 

HUMOR NEGRO 

Humour that finds fun in situations that from another perspective are not due to being dramatic, violent or sad. Black humour. 

 

MANO NEGRA 

Unknown person or group responsible for an act (usually criminal). 

Ha habido un asesinato… ¿Quién será la “mano negra”? 

The origin of the expression comes from an anarchist and violent organization in southern Spain (La Mano Negra) that never really existed and was an excuse for the government to stop revolts in Andalusia.

Not answering a question, usually on an exam. 

 

PONER/DEJAR LA MENTE EN BLANCO 

Think about absolutely nothing. Empty your mind 

Cuando medito intento dejar la mente en blanco, aunque es muy complicado. 

 

QUEDARSE EN BLANCO 

When you don’t remember something you were going to say. Go blank 

 

PASAR LA NOCHE EN BLANCO 

To have a sleepless night, not sleep a wink. 

 

ESTAR SIN BLANCA 

To be broke 

Cuando me mudé a Madrid para ser actriz estaba sin blanca y tuve que trabajar en un bar para poder pagar el alquiler.

Innocent humour. The opposite of dark/ black humour, comedy. 

 

DAR EN EL BLANCO 

To hit the target 

En 2015 dije que Suecia iba a ganar Eurovisión y di en el blanco.

IR DE PUNTA EN BLANCO 

Well-dressed 

Para la boda de los Reyes de España fui de punta en blanco. 

 

PONER LOS OJOS EN BLANCO 

Roll your eyes 

 

LADRÓN DE GUANTE BLANCO 

White-collar thief. 

El Profesor planeó el atraco a la Casa de la Moneda de Madrid como un auténtico ladrón de guante blanco. 

 

NO PARECERSE NI EN EL BLANCO DE LOS OJOS 

We use this expression to say that two people are completely different. 

Mi hermano y yo somos mellizos pero no nos parecemos ni en el blanco de los ojos. 

 

PONERSE/QUEDARSE BLANCO 

Get pale. 

 

BLANCO Y EN BOTELLA 

We use this phrase to say that something is obvious. What is white and bottled? Milk. Obvious.

Flipar means alucinar. When you can’t believe your eyes. 

¿Qué? No puedo creer que Marta y tú hayáis roto… Flipo. Flipo en colores.

Complemento directo or indirecto?

Learning how to use los pronombres de Complemento (or Objeto) Directo and Indirecto correctly is difficult even for Spanish speakers. That is why we wanted to simplify the explanation with this infographic based on what we are taught at school when we are young. Ask the verb! If we ask the verb we will know if the complement receives the action of the verb directly or indirectly and, therefore, the correct pronoun that we must use.
